The Jobs4Youth work program was established in an effort to break the “school to prison” pipeline that is becoming prevalent in our culture. Forty-nine percent of youth currently on probation are failing school and are already below their grade level. Ten percent of youth have already dropped out of school. We make no determination as to which came first – educational failure or behavioral failure. However, we are hopeful that by redirecting youth towards the workforce while they are within the jurisdiction of the Youth Court, we can assist in minimizing the percentage of those who would have otherwise ended up in adult incarceration and subsequently increase the percentage of youth contributing to our community's workforce.
Once an "out of school" juvenile (under age 18) is identified within the jurisdiction of the Youth Court and is adjudicated as neglected, abused or delinquent, the court must then decide on a disposition that is in the best interest of the youth. The Madison County Youth Court now has the Jobs4Youth program as a dispositional option that will assist youth in gaining knowledge and skills in preparation for a productive future.
